I have been educating myself on kayaks recently.

It turns out they come in all sizes and purposes. I had no idea there were so many options. My husband and I had the privilege of testing a couple out this past week. I discovered that you learn a lot more from trying them out than by just reading about them. The first one I tried was a small lightweight version that I figured would be the obvious winner. I struggled a little getting it moving and each time I rowed the front of the kayak would twist toward whichever side I was rowing. There were times I was going more side to side than forward. It was easy to change directions and move around but harder to just go straight.

The second kayak I tried was much longer, heavier, and had a rudder on it. The second kayak was smooth, easier to row, and faster. The front of the kayak stayed straight and steady despite my rowing. I became more fascinated with the rudder and how it worked to help navigate choppy waters and keep me on a straight path. It turns out I am a big fan of the rudder. It reminded me of how Jesus is like the rudder in our lives. The rudder helps us navigate our life and keep us on course.

Are you easily swayed? How well do you rely on Jesus to help you direct your path? Do you feel more stable and confident when you are depending on Him?

So that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Ephesians 4:14

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3: 5-6
