In theory, it is much easier to feel gratitude when things are going well.

However, I am learning that gratitude has more to do with a choice than our circumstances. In fact, it may be even easier to feel gratitude during hardships, which seems a bit counterintuitive. Practicing gratitude is scientifically shown to reduce stress, reduce pain, and increase happiness. So, even as we mourn and try to adjust to sudden changes life throws our way, finding ways to be grateful can help.

A lot of my gratitude today tends to revolve around relationships. For example, I am so grateful and humbled by the many people that have jumped in to help in active ways as we prepared for the recent hurricane and in dealing with the clean up of the damages. It’s an all-hands-on deck situation and there is comfort in the fact that none of us are alone. I am also grateful for a God that knows our hearts, for a God that is bigger than our current circumstances, and for a God that has a plan for good that is MUCH bigger than our own.

Are you experiencing any current hardships?

Name some things you are grateful for today.

What are some ways you can show your gratitude?

"give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

1 Thessalonians 5:18

and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.

Isaiah 61:3
